Introduction to Photographic Concepts
OBJECTIVES:
In this course, students will learn the basics of digital photography, learning to understand the qualities of light, the technical aspects of capture, editing and printing, and various styles of photography. Students will learn to use their digital cameras in different exposure modes, necessitating a comprehension of shutter speeds, apertures, ISOs, white balance, exposure metering, focal lengths, etc. Students will learn about editing techniques using Adobe Lightroom, Bridge, and Photoshop. Students will research, propose, and produce a final project portfolio of printed 8½”x11” photographs.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Demonstrate knowledge of basic digital camera functions including exposure, depth of field, shutter speeds, ISO, and white balance
Demonstrate basic knowledge of digital photographic editing using Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Photoshop and a presentation in a powerpoint file
Produce images showing aesthetic understanding of the formal elements of photographic and 2-D composition
Produce inkjet prints that show an understanding of tonal range and color balance
Demonstrate the ability to research, contextualize, interpret, and explain the work of historical and contemporary photographers
Discuss photographs in a critique by analyzing content, form and technical skill.

OBJECTIVES:
Intended to develop an understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of art in its many forms. Recommended as a fine arts elective for non-art majors.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Demonstrate the skills needed to read and critique a work of art using the elements and principles of art.
Identify historical periods in which artworks were made.
Recognize that a work of art reflects not only the ideas of the artist, but also the social and cultural context in which it was made.
Distinguish the processes and materials used in making different kinds of artworks.
Appreciate the role and skill of artists through artistic activities.
Become familiar with artwork in the student’s community.
Express one’s own viewpoint, and explain the reasons for that viewpoint, through visual means.

Photography I - Introduction to the Darkroom
OBJECTIVES: An Introduction to the basics of photography. Includes camera operation, techniques, knowledge of chemistry, and presentation skills. Emphasis on design, history, and contemporary trends as a means of developing an understanding of photographic aesthetics.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Become competent in manual 35mm camera operation.
Learn basic properties of photographic materials: i.e. film, paper, chemicals.
Gain familiarity with darkroom procedures.
Demonstrate the ability to make enlarged continuous-tone silver prints.
Illustrate an understanding of how light affects subject matter.
Develop/improve critical thinking skills that will inform your ideas and ultimately your images.
